How EquipmentShare is Rewriting the Playbook for Modern Apprenticeships

Apprenticeship Program Hero Graphic

Years ago, EquipmentShare set out with a clear mission: to build the future of construction by investing in the people who power it. As we celebrate another year of growth, we are looking beyond the numbers and at lives changed, barriers broken and a new standard for workforce development.

From doubling our state footprint to investing in those doing the tough work, here is how our apprenticeship program has evolved over the past 12 months.

Growing Our Footprint and Our Focus

A year ago, we were just beginning to scale. Today, the EquipmentShare apprenticeship program is officially registered in 11 states, adding seven new territories — including Florida, Texas and Utah — in just one year. But we aren't stopping at state lines; we have officially submitted for national registration to ensure every EquipmentShare branch can become a hub for career transformation.

Strategic Partnerships: The Power of WEX and OJT

We’ve strengthened our ties with high school career and technical education centers, Job Corps and workforce development boards.

We enroll students and emerging workers in work experience (WEX) programs. This is followed immediately by a six months of on-the-job training (OJT). These partnerships create a seamless transition from the classroom to the shop floor.

Our growth is being noticed at the highest levels of state government.

“EquipmentShare’s commitment to registered apprenticeships is exactly the kind of innovation Missouri needs to bolster our talent pipeline. By creating pathways, they are doing more than filling positions, they are providing career-defining opportunities for our youth and students. Seeing their investment in apprentices and their expansion across diverse locations is a testament to what is possible when industry leads the way in workforce development,” said Julie Carter, director of workforce development for the state of Missouri.

The CDL Advantage: Precision Beyond the License

Our CDL Driver Apprenticeship Program continues to be a crown jewel of our specialized training. Its impact is massive. Open to our Core, Advanced Solutions and Forge & Build teams, the program has successfully trained dozens of CDL apprentices this year, putting safer, more qualified drivers on the road.

However, we go far beyond the standard requirements of a CDL certificate. While traditional programs focus solely on operating the truck, the EquipmentShare playbook includes rigorous training on the complex logistics of loading and unloading heavy machinery. Securing an 80,000-pound load is an art and a science that is rarely taught in a standard driving school. By integrating this specialized training, we ensure our drivers are masters of the entire delivery lifecycle. They aren’t just safe behind the wheel of their truck; they are experts in the safe operation and transport of every machine our customers rent — from high-reach telehandlers to massive earthmovers. This dual-competency approach minimizes risk on the road and on the jobsite, ensuring that our “Connected Jobsite” begins the moment the trailer gate drops.

The Data-Driven Technician: Accelerating Expertise through T3

While our Technician Apprenticeship remains our core, it is being fundamentally transformed by the very technology we build. We are teaching apprentices how to turn a wrench and how to harness technology that drives efficiency on the jobsite.

In a traditional shop, a technician might spend hours, or even days, chasing a “ghost in the machine” — manual troubleshooting that relies solely on trial and error. At EquipmentShare, our apprentices are being trained on the T3® platform, which consumes a staggering 6.4 billion data points daily across our connected fleet.

This massive influx of real-time intelligence changes the learning curve in three distinct ways:

  • From guesswork to causation: Rather than starting from scratch, apprentices use powerful T3 insights to see exactly what a machine was “feeling” in the moments leading up to a fault. They see the heat, the pressure and the load history, allowing them to identify the root cause with surgical precision.
  • Rapid correction: With the data-driven playbook provided by T3, apprentices move to the correction phase significantly faster. This doesn't just improve shop efficiency; it builds the apprentice's confidence and technical vocabulary at an accelerated pace.
  • Mastering the digital twin: Our technicians learn to monitor the health of a machine remotely, often identifying and fixing a potential issue before the customer even knows it exists.

By marrying traditional mechanical skills with elite data literacy, we are producing a new breed of technician — one who is as comfortable with a tablet as they are with a torque wrench. We are shortening the distance between “novice” and “expert” by giving our people the most powerful diagnostic tool in the world.

Beyond the Wrench: Expanding Occupations

We’ve expanded our horizons to meet the diverse needs of our business.

The newest addition to our apprenticeship lineup is the warehouse technician role at our Columbia Distribution Center. While it may seem like a logistical move, its heart is in community impact. In partnership with the state of Missouri, we’ve built a specific pipeline for students facing significant life barriers, including homelessness, food insecurity and other hardships. Under the mentorship of leaders like Ken LaLonde and Marcia Reddick-Cottle at EquipmentShare’s Distribution Center in Columbia, Missouri, these students are learning inventory management while building a foundation for a stable, professional future.

“The impact goes beyond the job, as it’s about restoring confidence and creating a sense of belonging. These individuals are discovering what they’re capable of with the right support,” said Reddick-Cottle, the general manager of the Distribution Center.

“This program proves that when you invest in people and meet them where they are, the results go far beyond job training. We’re helping create purpose and long-term opportunity,” said LaLonde, the director of distribution.
